We zijn bijna over de helft, nog één wandeldag. Het was gisteren een dag waarvan ik even van bij moest komen. Gelukkig deed de jacuzzi goed zijn werk en kan ik weer fris de dag beginnen. We beginnen met de eerste 10 kilometer langs de Loch Lomond en wandelen daarna door richting Crianlarich, door de vallei en over oude militiewegen.

Overnachting: Crianlarich Youth Hostel

Wildkamperen: Eerste deel langs de Loch Lomond is het verboden om wild te kamperen. Daarna mag je tot aan Crianlarich wildkamperen.

Moeilijkheidsgraad: De eerste 10 kilometer een onregelmatig pad (veel klimmetjes), veel schaduw, langs Loch Lomond, genoeg water maar wel filteren. De laatste 10 kilometer tot aan Crianlarich, weinig schaduw, geen drinkbronnen, veel insecten, open velden en een aantal klimmen.

Lunchen: Lunchen kan uitgebreid bij Beinglas Farm Campsite of ergens in Inveranan.

Water: Neem 2/3 liter water mee, hervullen kan in Beinglas Farm Campsite of Inveranan – water uit Loch Lomond ook mogelijk maar wel met een waterfilter. Verder onderweg geen waterpunten.

Nieuwe ontmoetingen

Op dag 3 zijn Eva en ik uit elkaar gegaan, daarna ben ik tot aan Iversnaid alleen door gegaan. Toen ik verbleef in het Inversnaid Bunkhouse kwam ik een Isabell tegen, een vrouw uit Duitsland. Op dag 1 had ik haar al ontmoet toen we beide wilde gaan douchen. We hadden een leuk gesprek maar onze wegen scheiden al bij de volgende wandeldag.

Wat leuk dat ik haar hier nu tegen kwam. We raakte in gesprek en merkte dat we veel overeenkomsten hadden. Zij liep de trail alleen en ik nu ook. Beide vonden het ook wel leuk om deze dag samen te lopen en dan per dag te gaan kijken wat we zouden doen. Dus daar stonden we dan, aan het begin van dag 4 richting Crianlarich.

West Highland Way part 4: langs de Loch Lomond

Het was al vroeg in de ochtend behoorlijk warm. Wat waren we blij dat we gelijk in de schaduw konden lopen. Gelukkig hebben we op dag 3 al een voorproefje gehad van de trail langs de Loch Lomond en dit vind ik leuk! Elke keer een beetje omhoog en dan weer oplaag. Kruipend onder een paar bomen en soms zoeken naar het pad.

Afzien in de warmte

Na ongeveer 8 kilometer komen we onder de schaduw van de bomen vandaan. De temperatuur begint te stijgen en we merken dit gelijk. Dit is niet de normale temperatuur van Schotland! We besluiten meer te stoppen en extra te eten en te drinken want zweten doen we behoorlijk.

We hopen snel bij onze tussenstop te zijn want we snakken behoorlijk na een flink glas koud water. De kilometers blijven voort duren en lijken steeds langzamer te gaan. En dan uiteindelijk zien we Beinglas Farm Campsite. We komen vermoeid binnen en we ploffen neer op de bank en dan uit het niets komt meneer de barman met twee grote glazen ijs koud water aan. Ooooh wat was ik die meneer dankbaar.

Daarna was het tijd om mijn schoenen uit te doen, van sokken te wisselen, even een goede maaltijd te eten en te rusten in de schaduw. We besloten pas verder te gaan toen het iets minder begon te worden.

Van een koude kermis thuis komen

Helaas…dat wachten op dat het minder warm zou zijn, was een grote fout. Toen we aankwamen bij de Campsite was het al ruim 38 graden. Er stond geen wind en er was amper schaduw. Ook bevonden we ons in een vallei waar de warmte bleef hangen. Dus toen we om 16.00 uur besloten verder te lopen was het nog steeds 38 graden…en dat in Schotland waar het normaal koud is en regent.

Wandelen met 38 graden

Het was afzien! Mijn lichaam is hier zo niet voor gemaakt. Ik merkte aan alles dat ik het heel zwaar had. De temperatuur was echt een killer. Ik wist dat ik door moest zetten maar ooh wat was ik blij geweest als we er al waren geweest. Het zweet liep de laatste 10 kilometer als een waterval van mijn lichaam af. Niet normaal! Gelukkig werd het doorzetten beloont met prachtige uitzichten. Soms moesten we klimmen en geloof met dat is niet leuk met 38 graden maar als je dan daar bovenaan eindelijk een zuchtje wind voelt ben je zo ontzettend blij.

Eindelijk Crianlarich in zicht

En dan eindelijk zien we een bordje met Crianlarich staan. Wat was ik blij! Helaas was de weg naar Crianlarich nog zeker 3 kilometer…nou die wil je wel zo snel mogelijk achter je hebben. De weg was constant naar beneden en er leek geen eind aan te komen. We waren echt helemaal op want toen we eindelijk het hostel in kwamen plofte ik gelijk neer op de bank. Ik was op! De warmte had mij compleet uitgeput.

Eten, douche en slapen

Geen puf meer hebben om buiten de deur te gaan eten, dan maar een opwarm maaltijd. Op zich smaakte die wel maar echt honger had ik niet. De warmte had mij leeg gezogen. Gelukkig was de douche dicht in de buurt en mijn bed goed. Je kan het dus al wel raden dat ik vroeg naar bed ben gegaan. Mijn lichaam had rust nodig en mijn hoofd ook. Tot morgen!
